Swan Sofa

Designed by

Arne Jacobsen

The Swan Sofa, designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1958 for Fritz Hansen, was first created to furnish suites, lounges and the panoramic restaurant at the SAS Royal Hotel. Its sculptural, three-dimensional form — with no straight lines, only smooth curves — echoes the design of the Swan and Egg chairs, giving the sofa an organic yet architectural elegance. Originally produced between 1964 and 1974, it was reintroduced to Fritz Hansen’s collection in 2000, and remains a celebrated icon of mid-century Danish design.

Arne Jacobsen

Arne Jacobsen was born on February 11, 1902 in Copenhagen. His father, Johan Jacobsen, was a wholesale trader in safety pins and snap fasteners. His mother, Pouline Jacobsen, was trained as a bank clerk and often painted floral motifs in her spare time. The family lived in Claessensgade, Copenhagen in a typical Victorian style home. Maybe that is why Arne, as a child, painted the coloured wallpaper in his room white, as a contrast to his parents’ overly decorated taste.
