Swan Armchair
Designed by
Arne Jacobsen
The Swan armchair was designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1958 for SAS Royal Hotel’s lobby and lounges.
Its signature lies in its sculptural, organic shape — no straight lines, only smooth curves — achieved through a moulded foam shell fitted on a satin-polished aluminum star swivel base, upholstered in fabric or leather.
The Swan chair remains in continuous production by Fritz Hansen, and is regarded as a defining icon of mid-century Danish modern design.

Arne Jacobsen
Arne Jacobsen was born on February 11, 1902 in Copenhagen. His father, Johan Jacobsen, was a wholesale trader in safety pins and snap fasteners. His mother, Pouline Jacobsen, was trained as a bank clerk and often painted floral motifs in her spare time. The family lived in Claessensgade, Copenhagen in a typical Victorian style home. Maybe that is why Arne, as a child, painted the coloured wallpaper in his room white, as a contrast to his parents’ overly decorated taste.
