about this product
The Experiment Lounge Chair 501 / Green, designed by Yrjö Kukkapuro in 1982, is a striking example of postmodern Finnish design that blends sculptural expression with ergonomic comfort. Created during Kukkapuro’s experimental period, the chair reflects his desire to bring emotion and artistic freedom into functionalist furniture through bold curves, playful proportions, and vivid green detailing. Its low-slung silhouette and expressive armrests give the piece an almost architectural presence, while the carefully engineered seat maintains the exceptional comfort for which Kukkapuro became internationally renowned. Reissued by Hem, the Experiment 501 remains a vibrant icon of 1980s design, balancing nostalgia, craftsmanship, and futuristic character in one unforgettable lounge chair.

about the designer
Yrjö Kukkapuro
Yrjö Kukkapuro (1933–2025) was a renowned Finnish furniture designer celebrated for his pioneering approach to ergonomics, experimental forms, and modern seating design. Emerging from the strong tradition of Scandinavian modernism, Kukkapuro combined functional comfort with sculptural expression, creating pieces that blurred the line between industrial design and art. Throughout his long career, he became internationally recognised for iconic works such as the Karuselli Chair and the Experiment series, often using innovative materials including fibreglass, molded plastic, and metal. His work evolved from strict modernism toward a more expressive postmodern language in the 1970s and 1980s, while always maintaining a deep focus on the relationship between the human body and furniture.
