( about ) the designer
Anna Castelli Ferrieri
Anna Castelli Ferrieri (1918–2006) was a pioneering Italian architect and industrial designer, best known for bringing plastic into the world of high design. After studying architecture at Milan Polytechnic, she co-founded Kartell with her husband Giulio Castelli in 1949 and became its art director. She revolutionized the use of plastic in furniture, combining function, elegance, and affordability. Her most iconic piece is the Componibili modular storage unit (1969), still produced today. She also designed the first one-piece plastic chair and won two Compasso d’Oro awards (1987 & 1994). Ferrieri taught at Domus Academy, wrote on design theory, and held leadership roles in Italy’s design community. A bold innovator and one of the first women in her field, she helped define Italian modernism and left a lasting legacy in architecture and product design.
