About the Designer

Harry Bertoia
Harry Bertoia (1915–1978) was an Italian-American artist, designer, and sculptor known for transforming metal into expressive, poetic forms. Trained in sculpture and design, he explored the relationship between space, material, and sound, creating works that blurred the boundary between art and function. His furniture for Knoll—especially the Bertoia wire chair series—became modern design icons, celebrated for their airy geometry and sculptural elegance. Beyond furniture, Bertoia gained recognition for his “Sonambient” sound sculptures, large metal pieces that produced resonant tones when touched, reflecting his lifelong fascination with movement, vibration, and the sensory qualities of metal.
