Djinn Collection a Tribute to 2001: A Space Odyssey

Designed by

Olivier Mourgue

The Djinn Collection, designed by Olivier Mourgue in 1965, epitomizes the futuristic spirit of the Space Age. Featuring fluid, low-slung forms upholstered in stretch jersey over foam, the series includes an iconic armchair and a sleek two-seat sofa. Their organic silhouettes and vibrant colors broke from traditional design norms, offering a sense of weightlessness and modernity. Immortalized in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, the Djinn pieces became symbols of avant-garde living, blending comfort with sculptural elegance.

Olivier Mourgue

Olivier Mourgue (born 1939 in Paris, France) is a French industrial designer best known for his futuristic furniture designs of the 1960s and 1970s. Trained at the École Boulle and the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, he worked for Airborne International where he created some of his most iconic pieces. His most famous work, the Djinn seating series (1965), became a symbol of the Space Age aesthetic and achieved global recognition after being featured in Stanley Kubrick’s film 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). Mourgue's designs are characterized by bold organic forms, ergonomic comfort, and experimental use of materials like foam and stretch fabrics. Later in his career, he focused on urban planning and landscape architecture in Brittany, France, moving away from mass production. Today, his creations remain icons of mid-century modern and pop design, showcased in major design museums worldwide.
