Tom Dixon

Tom Dixon (born 1959) is a British designer best known for his innovative furniture, lighting, and interior designs. Self-taught, he first gained attention in the 1980s for his experimental approach to materials, often working with scrap metal to create unique welded furniture. His breakthrough came with pieces like the “S Chair” (1989), which became an icon of contemporary design and was acquired by Cappellini in Italy. In the 1990s, Dixon served as Head of Design at Habitat (1998–2008), where he revitalized the brand by making design more accessible to the wider public. In 2002, he founded his own label, Tom Dixon Studio, which has since become a globally recognized brand. The studio focuses on lighting, furniture, and home accessories, often characterized by industrial forms, metallic finishes, and bold sculptural shapes. Notable works include the Mirror Ball light, Beat light series, and the Melt pendant. Today, Tom Dixon is considered one of the UK’s most influential contemporary designers. His work is exhibited internationally and can be found in museums like the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
